Dan's 120" B-26 Douglas Invader - Page 2

March 20, 2005

Doing some of the art work. Still needs some refinement.

A little bit of an update. Don't know why but could not refuse.

Notice the center of the control wheel.

Just had to have it! Silly, I know. Purchased it off the internet from a site that sells vintage aircraft parts.

Anyway, I have been collecting pictures off the internet of Douglas A-26's, B-26's and ran across some people (122nd restoration group) that had restored one. They have two CD's with several hundred pictures of the project. The check is in the mail! Also have finished putting together the Extra 300 so will now start to get some time on the engine(s). 6300 rpm with a 22 x 8. Now if the sun would come out!

On a sadder note: 122nd - Monsted. I think that I mentioned before that I picked up some CD's of photos from the 122nd restoration group. One of these contained photos of the LA ANG from the 40's showing their Douglas B-26's. I've picked up some ideas for scale building from this. I think most, if not all the photos were from Robert Monsted. I have also collected some stories about the flying the B-26. If anyone is interested in something like that I will post parts of them. I think research like this is part of the fun of building.

Well, starting to get excited again about working on this. Cleaned up the work space. Hey, that's a start! I have had some progress since the last update, and will take pics soon. Also have met someone else on the internet who has built the same size plane. A wealth of information.... yes! And for your reading enjoyment from the 13th bomb squadron...a great web site.

I know of another person who built this size A-26 and used gear from some one else. I'll email him and try to find out more info. Haven't heard from him in awhile so don't get your hopes up.

The A-26 is a beautiful plane. Jeff Ethell's "Wonderful World of Warbirds" volume 3 has about 20 minutes of him flying the Invader.

Avaition Media Inc.

When I watch it, I have to hit rewind several times when he starts those R2800s. Then I have to go take a cold shower!

Here is a pic of the main gear. Wheels/tires are 6.5 inches in diameter.

Forget to mention, the mains have the B-25 wheels since alot of the A-26's that I have pictures of in Korea had them. Not all though. Some had the spoke wheels. Most had the spoke nose wheel. Next is a shot of the nose gear fully retracted. It is steerable as long as there is weight on it. As they swing up, they lock in place and then rotate 90 degress. I think the retract angle is like 105 degress but I don't have my info handy.

I should have lined up the hubs better for the photo-op.

Next photo is nose gear fully extended. This shot shows the problem that I have with the wheel not in-line. I think that I will take off the fork and make a new one with stainless steel thick wall tubing that I have here at work.

I would like it to look more like this:

In response to some questions from someone at RCScaleBuilder -

"...the good thing is that it fits the plans with no mods needed. " -- Yes and no. They are specified for the plans but the structure needs to be beefed up. The nose is the worse.

"the problems we had were that the pins that held critical parts together vibrated out when we ran the plane. perhaps it was just one thing and its been solved." -- The moving parts have rivits (sp?) in them. Sure does not look very nice. May have to change that.

"do you plan to make the bomb bays functional? it really makes the model complete." -- right now no. I have cut in a giant access hatch in the scale position of the bomb bay, so if I cut this down the middle I guess it could be functional. I am planning on putting the radio stuff there.

Been cutting out ribs. Let the dust fly! Also ordered and received wing tubes. Checked in on the 122nd bomb sqd restoration unit in New Orleans. Not looking well. (After Katrina)

September 14, 2005

Well, this is not working. Probably should have done this before I cut out the ribs, but they are all the wrong size when compared to the plan view. Some are off 1/4 inch. So, I think the ribs will go into the fire pit tonight! Yeah, that'l teach them! So unless someone has a suggestion/better idea, I am going to have to redraw the ribs and make sure they fit the plan first. In fact, I better compare left wing to right wing plans.

October 7, 2005

I finished re-drawing the wing ribs yesterday. They were all short at least by 1/4 inch and some by as much as 3/4 inch. I hope to start cutting again this weekend. 38 of the little ******s! I only drew the outline. Once the ribs are cut then I will transfer vertically up from the plan view the locations of the spars, wing tube, flaps, ect.... I am sure you guys know of an easier way, but since I am new at this, this is the best way I know how. It will take time.

Need some help! On the wing tip wash out. By raising the trailing edge of the wing tip doesn't that effect the aileron hinging or is the aileron also twisted? Offset the hinge ??? I think I found the problem of the wrong size ribs. In the upper picture there is a small tick mark on the horizontal line, indicating the length of each rib. Most of the ribs were drawn short because he added the length of the wing sheeting before instead of after drawing the rib. Does that make since? Anyway, I got the length off the plan view and when I compare each rib to this drawing, they all line up with the tick marks. I am not PO'ed. Just one of those things, but the reason I mention it here is in case someone else wants to build from these plans, they can watch out for this.
